Rather than rehashing the familiar arguments against infant baptism, this work seeks to undercut its very foundation. What is the theological system which undergirds infant baptism and where does this system come unraveled? This work answers these questions by explaining the distinction in the nature of the old and new covenants and their often misunderstood relationship with one another. This critical discussion of the continuity and discontinuity of the covenants is thoroughly explored in this book. To understand the biblical connection between the covenants, it is vital to first understand the dual nature of the Abrahamic Covenant. What is the relationship between Abraham and Moses, Abraham and Christ, and Moses and Christ? The debate of continuity and discontinuity between the old and new covenants cannot be properly solved until the intended nature of the Abrahamic Covenant is fully comprehended.

Endorsements

“This is an excellent and outstanding work, which deals with the subject from the ground up— one of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen! For Thomas, the cosmological argument not only speaks of God’s existence but also of God’s nature. By learning that the unmoved mover is behind all moving objects, we learn something true about the essence of God—principally, that God is immobile. But therein lies the problem for Thomas. The Catholic Church had already condemned Aristotle’s unmoved mover because, according to Aristotle, the unmoved mover is unable to be the moving cause (i.e., Creator) and governor of the universe—or else he would cease to be immobile. By seeking to baptize Aristotle into the Catholic Church, however, Thomas gave his life to seeking to explain how God can be both immobile and the moving cause of the universe. Thomas even looked to the pantheistic philosophy of Pseudo-Dionysius for help. But even with Dionysius’s aid, Thomas failed to reconcile the god of Aristotle with the Trinitarian God of the Bible. If Thomas would have rejected the natural theology of Aristotle by placing the doctrine of the Trinity, which is known only by divine revelation, at the foundation of his knowledge of God, he would have rid himself of the irresolvable tension that permeates his philosophical theology. Thomas could have realized that the Trinity alone allows for God to be the only self-moving being—because the Trinity is the only being not moved by anything outside himself but freely capable of creating and controlling contingent things in motion.

________________________________________________________________

"With his usual breadth of knowledge and insight, Jeffrey has given Thomas and natural theology an even-handed assessment. It traces the incarnation, birth, life, and ministry of Jesus Christ, with a special focus on His crucifixion, resurrection, ascension, and exaltation. It culminates with a call to repent and believe, ending with the evidence of true conversion. Because philosophies of this world are not built on natural revelation, they do not share a common foundation with the Christian worldview. The various impersonal conceptions of God purported by classical, modern, and post-modern philosophy directly oppose the personal God of Scripture. Instead of borrowing from the spoils of pagan philosophy, Christians should reject philosophy and build their doctrine of God exclusively from divine revelation. God’s words are words of self-disclosure. Furthermore, if God is to be known, he must take the initiative to reveal himself to fallen, finite creatures. These truths should be precious to the Church. But today, God’s revelation in nature and in Scripture, and the use of philosophy to articulate the doctrine of God, are all hotly contested issues. Sometimes the rhetoric is uncharitable at best. Into this fray Jeff Johnson has entered once again. Jeff sees a truly fundamental difference between philosophical classical theism and biblical classical theism. Jeff argues that it is the sufficient Scriptures, the inspired self-disclosure of God, that authoritatively reveals God’s transcendence and immanence. The God of creation has been revealed in His own holy Word and in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is this revelation alone that gives us a true knowledge of God. What are the responsibilities of the head of the home? Of course, men are called to provide, protect, and lead their families. But how are these overarching obligations to be applied to their family's spiritual well-being? A Man as Priest in His Home is an excellent handbook for answering this question. Sam Waldron walks husbands and fathers through their biblical duties as the spiritual leaders of their families. As with the responsibilities of priests in the Old Covenant, the head of the home is called to pray, lead the family in worship, and teach and apply the Scriptures in all areas of life. Among other things, a priest is called to be a counselor, teacher, intercessor, encourager, and judge.

Endorsements

As the head of my home, I am deeply thankful for this practical book. This reality can be difficult for us to live by. The book of Ecclesiastes takes us on a journey to show us that although this life is a vapor, it is still a gift from God meant to be enjoyed. I no longer interpret Solomon’s words as the somber musings of a secular sage about the harsh realities of this fallen world. Instead, they have been transformed into a message of hope, a catalyst to trust God, and a goad to live life to the fullest.

As you read through this work, you will be confronted with the realities of life in a fallen world. Yes, there is suffering, pain, death, and oftentimes an encroaching sense of futility. However, for the believer, the brevity of life is an incentive to live life to the fullest, and the uncertainties of life are opportunities to trust in an omnipotent, loving, and faithful Creator who gives good gifts to His children and will one day make all things new. Contemporary Christianity, especially in the West, is filled with extremes. On one hand, there are voices urging believers to live their best life now, almost in disregard of eternity. On the other hand, there are voices admonishing us to put our heads down, look for nothing in this life, and mournfully long for heaven. Dr. Borgman sweeps away both extremes by simply expounding the book of Ecclesiastes. He shows us that we are to relish every good thing as a gift from God, face every hardship with hope in a sovereign God, and await a new heaven and earth with great expectation. I will never look at the book of Ecclesiastes the same way again. It is a book that shouts at us, “Do not waste your breath! Enjoy it while you have it.”’ He then expounds the book in twenty riveting chapters, easily accessible to the man in the pew. The first chapter deals with the Hebrew word most versions translate ‘vanity’ or ‘meaningless,’ giving the key to all that follows. It is the ‘lack of permanence, rather than meaninglessness … brevity, not vanity, is this book’s message.’ What follows is a beautifully written, well argued, compelling page-turner. The author deals with various difficulties of the text, sometimes giving other interpretations as well as the one he favours. Judging from the footnotes on most pages, and his bibliography, he has read widely and judiciously. The book is well laid out, with a decent size print. While some readers may disagree on certain points, few, if any, will leave this exposition disappointed or unedified. For myself, it has been the most helpful exposition on Ecclesiastes I have ever read. It seems fitting to let Borgman give us the last word: ‘Do not waste this short, fleeting life. Seize every opportunity to obey God by enjoying this life for His glory, living for the Great Shepherd of the sheep, marveling at His gifts, both the temporary and the eternal ones. Although Solomon is realistic about life in a fallen world that is full of uncertainty, injustice, suffering, pain, and death, he also shows that man’s vaporous life is full of God’s beautiful gifts—like food, youth, work, and marriage—and that we can glorify our Creator by enjoying these gifts with thanksgiving. Free access to the Father through the name of Christ by the power of the Spirit is a gift to be treasured above all other treasures. God works by, in, and through prayer. By prayer, we enter and enjoy fellowship with God. By prayer, we worship God. By prayer, our needs are set before God. By prayer, we participate in the work of God on earth. By prayer, we enter into God’s blessings. Without prayer, we shouldn’t expect to receive anything from God; with prayer, we should expect great things from God. Nelson IV, aka Cuatro, one of our Pastors. He is also our friend. But most importantly, he is the person from whom we hear the Gospel proclaimed most frequently. Never have we encountered the seeping permeation of the Gospel stronger and deeper than we do in our precious little Church. We hear it in song, in Scripture, in recitation, at every single meeting and always, without fail, in his preaching. That may seem like a small thing or a thing that is assumed or a thing that is expected, but we have learned that it is inexplicably rare. We have indeed come to expect it and we try not to ever take it completely for granted. Cuatro is obsessed with three things other than his wonderful wife… Christmas, the Gospel and the local Church. It makes perfect sense that he has written this book. It was a joy to read and meditate on. The only flaw we see is that it is not quite long enough. The miracle of all miracles is that over two thousand years ago in the little town of Bethlehem, God the Son took on flesh, lived among us, died for His beloved sinful people, and rose from the dead having accomplished their complete redemption. Nelson’s book focuses us on the end, or goal, of Christ’s incarnation, which is His death. While some sentimentalize Christmas, making it exclusively about the baby in a manger, Jesus was born “the lamb of God.” He was born to die for His people, to claim a bride for Himself and to bring us back to God. Unlike many treatments of music in worship, the author not only articulates how the Word of God should inform our musical habits on the Lord’s Day, but he also shows how Scripture speaks to our enjoyment of music throughout the week. In this nuanced treatment, which also values psalm-singing, you will find the seasoned reflections of a gifted pastor, theologian, and musician on a much-needed topic in our day. Above all, the author shows how worshiping God in song is a key element of doxology as we seek to live all of life for the glory of God. He is a unicorn who combines theological wisdom, musical expertise, and pastoral prudence. As a revised and expanded edition of the original 2009 work, this volume is even better than it was the first time around, benefitting from many experiences and formulation over the past fifteen years. A unique feature of this book is how expertly Aniol addresses the importance of choosing music for worship that aligns with God, not necessarily copying the forms and emotionalism so prevalent. This must-get book for your church understands well how weekly worship follows and is instructed on biblical preaching. If the first edition was a clarion call to eschew pragmatism and depend on revealed teachings about worship—fruit that lasts—this trumpet blast is even clearer and stronger.

— David Hall
Senior Pastor, Midway Presbyterian Church, Powder Springs, Georgia

Worship in Song is one of the most insightful explanations of biblical worship that I have ever read. Far too frequently, advocates for both “contemporary music” and “traditional music,” while giving verbal testimony to their concern for God’s glory, defend their positions with man-centered reasoning. Although proponents of neither position would admit it, what pleases people often takes precedence over any consideration of what pleases the Lord. Scott Aniol’s treatment of this hot topic is refreshingly and delightfully different. Throughout, his analysis is God-focused, biblically based, thought provoking, and practical. Working through this book renewed my belief in the vital place of the Holy Spirit in my life. I have been reminded afresh to wait on God daily to fill me with the Holy Spirit. I believe that if you pick up this book and slowly work through it you too will receive the same help — that is to say, it will educate you, challenge and hopefully position you in that place where you will want to regularly have fellowship with the Holy Spirit. This is largely due to the overwhelming number of oddities, errors, and abuses being propagated in His name. So often, believers in the West are told, ‘The Spirit is doing amazing things [i.e. charismata] in Africa, whereas we stiff-arm His work here.’ Yet how refreshing and helpful is it, then, to have Conrad Mbewe, perhaps the most salient pastoral voice in Africa, teaching the church about the doctrine of the Holy Spirit! As their father sold off treasured family belongings to buy liquor, his sister radiated joy—singing “Amazing Grace” while she prepared a meal that was next to nothing. But Conrad still thought his “good deeds” were enough. This changed when a friend declared to him that salvation is solely God’s work. Driven to his knees, Conrad repented and gave his life to Christ. After a short stint as a mining engineer, he accepted a call at age 25 to pastor Kabwata Baptist Church, located in the Zambian capital of Lusaka. Serving there since 1987, Conrad has helped to start roughly 40 other Reformed churches in countries across Africa.

Author Bio

Dr. Conrad Mbewe has served as pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church since 1987 in Lusaka, Zambia, Africa.
