Description
The Glory of the Cross is a devotional study of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ designed to deepen our experiential communion with God. It is not merely a harmony of the Gospels that presents the life of Christ in chronological order. Rather, it is a detailed study of the various characteristics and attributes of Christ as they come together to reveal the glory of God through His humble service and sufferings.
Paradoxically, God’s glory shines most brightly through Christ’s humility. The glory of God’s love, grace, mercy, kindness, and patience is most clearly revealed in Christ’s sacrificial service, suffering, and death. If we desire to understand the depth of Christ’s love for us, we must contemplate the agony and shame of the cross. The old rugged cross is not merely an emblem of suffering and shame; it is also an emblem of beauty and grace. The more we meditate on the magnitude of Christ’s sacrifice, the more our hearts are stirred with love, gratitude, and worship toward God.
Though the majesty of God’s glorious essence is too brilliant to behold, we are free to gaze deeply upon the nature of God as we look into the face of His beloved Son. We behold the blinding brilliance of God's glory in the humility, service, and sufferings of the Lord Jesus. The splendor of God's glory is most clearly displayed and apprehended in the cross. In that dark moment, we see the fullness of God's light and magnificence.
If we desire to see, know, and experience God, let us devote ourselves to the study of the life of Christ, for in Him the fullness of God is revealed.

Jeffrey D. Johnson is the founding pastor of Grace Bible Church and President of Grace Bible Theological Seminary in Conway, Arkansas, where he resides with his wife, Letha, and their four children.
