What's New in the Second Edition?

This new Second Edition is not only revised and expanded in content, but also comes in an attractive hardcover with durable binding and natural paper.  We do not have our own printer press, but let's just say we use the same folks who print off the quality Banner of Truth books in the good ol' US of A.

"I am encouraged by the positive reception of the first edition of The Confessing Baptist and grateful to Free Grace Press for the opportunity to publish this second edition. This edition includes several additions.

First, I have added an excursus of over 2,000 words to my essay on biblical and theological guidelines for choosing and using a confession (Chapter 9). This excursus addresses   the question: “Must We Always Confess the Authorial Intent of a Confession?”

Second, this edition features two new contributors: Matthew Forman and John Wayne Sweat Jr. Matt’s essay (Chapter 10) argues that “substantial subscription” is the most biblically balanced and pastorally wise form of confessional affirmation for Reformed Baptist churches united by a shared commitment to the Second London Confession of Faith. In many ways, his contribution builds on the guidelines I propose in my own essay.

John’s essay (Chapter 11) emphasizes the importance and benefits of Baptists using a catechism to root families and congregations in sound doctrine and promote spiritual growth. He commends the time-tested Baptist Catechism—based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism—and provides a brief history of its composition and use among Particular Baptist churches.

Finally, since the release of the first edition, several new resources on creeds and confessions have been published. Notably, Rob Ventura and James Renihan have released fresh expositions of the Second London Confession, and John Sweat Jr. has a forthcoming commentary on the Baptist Catechism. These works are now listed in the 'Resources for Further Study' at the end of the book."

Description

A growing number of Baptist churches today are rediscovering their confessional heritage. The contributors to this book welcome this rediscovery. Indeed, they hope it continues! With that end in view, they have written and compiled these essays to celebrate and commend the use of creeds and confessions in Baptist faith and life. The primary audiences they have in view are local church leaders and members because sound theology is not just the province of the academy but is essential to the health and ministry of the local church.
